How you can help

Mohammed Abed

AfCiC has been a big supporter of Mohammed since we met him in 2005. Now he is 18 years old and has come a long way despite the challenges he has faced in his past. Mohammed’s father raised him and his brother, Peter, in Ithanga, a rural area in the Central Province of Kenya. Sadly, their mother died when the boys were very young and they only had their father to depend on.

Mohammed’s father worked at a local farm but struggled to make a sufficient income to provide for his children. He often spent his money on other luxuries instead of the basic necessities. Mohammed lived in extreme poverty and turned to the streets hoping to earn small change for food. He wandered to various towns and markets occasionally returning home. AfCiC’s outreach team learned of Mohammed’s situation and he became a part of the 2005 rehabilitation intake.

After graduating from the ICC, we placed him in St. Francis Children’s Village, a primary boarding school in Meru. Mohammed spent a year in school but found the curriculum very difficult and felt ostracized from the other boys. He then decided to run home to his father in Ithanga and went back to the streets to earn money for his father and his younger brother. Mohammed’s father had recently been robbed and beaten, suffering injuries that made it difficult for him to engage in manual labor so he was left without a job. Although the father continued to disregard Mohammed and be very unsupportive, Mohammed felt a responsibility toward his family.

AfCiC had maintained contact and learned that Mohammed returned to the streets of Thika and needed assistance. We were able to meet his Aunt who was very willing to support Mohammed and provide for him. Mohammed moved into her Kiandutu home and recently graduated from a local primary boarding school. He is now enrolled in Secondary School and hopes to complete his education in the next four years. The aunt has trouble covering all the costs of the school and we are seeking additional support so that Mohammed can remain in school. He is a constant visitor to the ICC and helps engage the younger boys in various activities and responsibilities. Everyone enjoys Mohammed’s company and we hope to see him excel in the future.

If you are interested in supporting Mohammed’s studies, we kindly ask for an annual payment of £400. Please contact the Sponsorship Coordinator at sponsorship@actionchildren.org with further inquiries.
