Peter Mukuha
Peter Mukuha is a 17 year-old from Kiandutu, a slum area just outside of Thika. AfCiC has worked
closely with Peter and his family since 2004 through our outreach programmes. The staff has had the
pleasure of seeing him grow into a mature and energetic young-man.
Peter grew up as the youngest of 7 children in a small home in Kaindutu with his mother and father. His mother has not held a job in many years and works around the house during the day. His father earns a steady yet insufficient income as a shoe maker. The profits rarely cover the expenses of food, school fees, clothing, and security. In effect, as a young boy Peter dropped out of school and followed his older sister to the street. Peter spent years on and off the street searching for food and any small amounts of money he could earn. This lifestyle hardened Peter and encouraged aggressive behavior in order to cope from the threats of older street boys. Fortunately Peter met an AfCiC staff member and became a regular visitor to the outreach center, which offered meals and daily activities to distract him from the street. We were able to enroll him back in school at Jamuri Primary School. He has recently graduated from Primary School and is in Form 1 at Queen of Rosary Secondary School. Despite the fact that Peter is five years older than most of the other boys in Form 1, he does not let the age difference discourage him. He works very hard at school and especially excels in English class.
Fortunately, we have also seen Peter’s parents take a more active and positive role in his life. His father even saved up to reward Peter with a bicycle that he rides to school each day. They are in full support of his education and hope for a bright future for their son. AfCiC supported Peter to join secondary school but to continue his education, we are seeking a sponsor that is willing to contribute toward school fees, a uniform, and school items.
If you are interested in supporting Peter’s studies, we kindly ask for an annual payment of £250. Please contact the Sponsorship Coordinator at sponsorship@actionchildren.org with further inquiries.
