Social/Youth Worker
Action for Children in Conflict (AfCiC) have an exciting opportunity that offers social workers/ youth workers the chance to working directly with vulnerable children in Thika as part of our Interim Care Centre Team.
The Interim Care Centre (ICC) in Thika, Kenya provides intensive rehabilitation for street children in a residential setting. The ICC is for children who find it especially hard to break from the street or whose family situations require in-depth intervention to make the home environment a safe place for the child. There, during residential care for up to six months, intensive rehabilitation and family reintegration work prepares the way for a return home. Staff members liaise with families, local institutions, schools and support organisations to facilitate each child's return to society
We are looking for a Social Worker/ Youth Worker to volunteer alongside our experienced staff (Social Workers, Teacher & Counsellor) to assist us with the care and rehabilitation of the Street Children.
Job Description:
As a volunteer Social Worker/ Youth Worker you will be involved in the essential care and support that these children need whilst they undergo successful rehabilitation.
You will be involved in planning and participating in group counselling sessions, education classes and life skill lessons, as well as attending to home visits and parent meetings where appropriate.
You will also have the opportunity to organise your own creative activities in the afternoons following consultation with our staff. This may involve arts and crafts, sports, music and drama. Some children will need extra support and may require extra attention or help with things like reading.
Time commitment: 3, 6 or 9 months.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Qualification in Social Work/ Youth Work.
- At least 1 year of experience working with vulnerable children.
- Some teaching experience desirable.
- A highly-motivated self-starter able to work on own initiative in difficult conditions.
- Experience of working in developing countries or in a multi-cultural environment.
- Excellent inter-personal and oral communication skills.
- Ability to solve-problems.
Cost:
£700 for 3 months , £900 for 6 months or £1100 for 9 months. We ask all volunteers to make a modest project contribution. This money will be used directly to improve our Social Work Programme at the Interim Care Centre, and to enable other activities to support the work which the volunteer will be involved in.
This does not include rent for accommodation, which is £120 per month. In addition you will have to pay for your flights, insurance, vaccinations and other in country expenses.
