Mofat Itemo

Name: Mofat Itemo
Age: 13
Family: Mofat’s parents separated in 2007, he has 3 brothers and sisters. Through Family Sponsorship his mother, Mary, has been supported in setting up a photography business in Kiandutu slum, where they live.
Background information: Mofat‘s parents got divorced last year, leaving his mother, Mary, to bring up the four children single-handedly. The first born, Geoffrey, was attacked four years ago on his way to work and was substantially injured. He has lost all use of his right hand and leg and still has to attend the hospital every month for physiotherapy, which is costly. Despite Mary’s best efforts, most of her income was spent on medical bills and the family often went without food. Mary took on casual jobs to try and support her children but her income was not enough and she continued to struggle to pay the hospital bills. She also has some health problems herself which means that she is not always able to go to work. The children are all bright and, despite the problems at home, they are all continue to attend school regularly.
How Family Sponsorship Has Assisted The Family: Through Family Sponsorship AfCiC has helped Mary so that she is able to support her children and make sure their food and health needs are met. She is an extremely capable and intelligent woman who has an innovative eye for business. Using her business loan she has set up an income generating activity (IGA) taking photographs of people and events around Kiandutu. She also continues to do casual jobs around the area to increase her income. She is enthusiastic and really cares about the welfare of her children. She just needed a helping hand to get her started. In the future we would also like to help Geoffrey to set up an IGA so that he can have a future despite his disability. Helping Geoffrey in this way would also relieve some of the burden on his mother.
