What we do

Internally Displaced Children and Families Programme

Programme Outline

Over 6000 persons were displaced to Thika District in the aftermath of the post-election violence in early 2008. These children, individuals and families found their way to relatives, supportive community members or utilised their own resources to resettle in the district. As they chose not to stay in the IDP camps, less attention was devoted to their needs. Our Internally Displaced Children and Families programme assists these families in a number of ways including micro-finance loans to set up businesses, support with costs of schooling for children, counselling, training and free legal advice.

Activities

  • Provision of school uniform, payment of registration fees, school fees and other school expenses
  • Tailored and specialised counselling for children and their parents
  • Micro finance loans for parents to start new businesses
  • Repatriation assistance for families who want to return to their homes
  • Free legal advice on land rights, property rights and Government compensation for IDPs
  • Interactive inter-tribal training on peace and conflict resolution
