AfCiC Launches Kenya Emergency Appeal 11 Jan 2008
We are launching an emergency appeal in response to the widespread fighting and rise in inter-tribal tension unleashed in Kenya over the results of the recent Presidential Elections, which are having a devastating effect on the country and have drastically impacted our programmes there. We desperately require funds for the practical and immediate needs generated by this humanitarian crisis: food, clothing, shelter, counselling and support facilities to help children cope with the trauma resulting from the crisis. KCLAW Conducts "Child Sexual Abuse" Workshop 14 May 2007
In April 2006 there were forty-six reported cases at the Thika District Hospital which has the only rape counselling centre in Thika. Twenty-two were under the age of eighteen; twenty-four were under the age of twelve. Over that past year (2006) at least one case of child sexual abuse was reported every other day at the Thika Police Station. And unfortunately this is only the tip of the iceberg. Multiples of those numbers are never reported, particularly where the abuser is someone responsible for protecting the child - parents, relatives, maids, houseboys etc. And children engaged in child labour, street children and children in domestic labour and institutions are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation.
